Information Technology (IT) is a term used to describe a broad category of various types of computer-related professional disciplines. IT typically refers to computer-related specialties in the business operation of an organization. Hardware (computer related equipment) and software (computer control instructions) are the two main components of Information Technology. IT hardware includes computers, network devices, and printers. IT software includes operating systems (Windows, Windows Server, LINUX), word processors, spreadsheets, and other applications.

The Information Technology department offers specialty training in the following areas:

  • Applications Professionals - use of commercially available software used to increase the productivity of professionals
  • Computer Security - tools and techniques used to safeguard the communications networks of an organization from unauthorized access
  • Database - design, implementation and maintenance of databases for effective storage of organizational data
  • Gaming - creation of computer games for multiple potential audiences - the audiences target use includes entertainment, training, and scenario planning (simulation)
  • Networking - networking allows the exchange of data between computers - two Networking specialties include Network Administration and Cisco Academy certification
  • Operating Systems - various forms of software designed to control the resources of a computer and computer network - examples include Windows, LINUX, and Active Directory
  • Programming - creation of custom software using languages such as C++, C#, Java, and Visual Basic.NET
  • Web - creation of interactive websites utilizing programming tools such as VBScript, ASP.NET, and PHP - this specialty supports the creation of e-commerce websites
