The Health Information Technology field places you right where healthcare meets the cutting edge of technology. Health Information Technology personnel are experts in managing patient health information, administering computer information systems and coding the diagnosis and procedures for health care services provided to patients. Health Information Technology is one of the few health occupations in which there is little or no direct contact with patients.

Macomb's Health Information Technology program is a two-year program that leads to an Associate of Applied Science degree. With the passage of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the demand for health information professionals has increased.

Macomb's Health Information Technology program offers students state-of-the art computer equipment and software in a dedicated Health Information Technology laboratory.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). (www.cahiim.org). CAHIIM recognizes degree-granting programs in Health Informatics and Information Management that have undergone a rigorous process of voluntary peer review and have met or exceeded the minimum accreditation standards set by the professional association in cooperation with CAHIIM.

Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to write the national certification examination of AHIMA for the designation of Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).
