BIOTECHNOLOGY

The biotechnology course combines lecture and laboratory to study the structure and function of DNA, RNA, and proteins.  Emphasis is placed on the use of biotechnology to improve the quality of life through various applications of biotechnology including drug production and improved crop development.  Topics include recombinant DNA technology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and pharmacogenetics.  In the laboratory, students perform various techniques including gene cloning, PCR, analysis of DNA using agarose gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting, chromatography, and analysis of proteins using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.  The biotechnology course is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in fields such as biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, medicine, and pharmacy.
