WINTER BLAST RETURNS TO MACOMB
Macomb Community College will host its annual Softball Winter Blasts on February 11th and February 18th at the Sports and Expo Center. This round robin-style event is a great way to stay in shape over the winter, while allowing coaches to start building the foundation of the team early.

- Three-game event
- 55 minute time limit per game
- 1 and 1 count to start each game
- Game balls will be Indoor Flex

ARMADA DUO CHOOSES MACOMB
Macomb Community College Softball Coach Joe Cavataio has signed two more players to Letters of Intent for the Fall 2011-2012.
Tayler Ryan – Armada H.S.
Molli Golab – Armada H.S.
Ryan has played third base and pitcher. Throughout her
career, she received All-Academic, All-Conference, All-District, All-County, All-Region, and All-State honors. This past season, Ryan batted .402 and was named team MVP. She plans on studying Early Childhood Development, while at Macomb.
Golab played in the outfield while in high school. She received All-League, All-District, All-County, All-Region, and All-State honors. This summer, Golab plans on playing for Mark Uplegger with the Richmond Blues.

Macomb Community College Softball Coach Joe Cavataio has signed another to a Letter of Intent for the Fall 2011-2012.
Hannah Raineri – Cousino H.S.
Raineri has played varsity softball under Coach Molly Gale at Cousino at pitcher, 2nd base, and centerfield. She captained the varsity team for her final three years. She also plays softball with the Michigan Bulldogs. Raineri graduated with a 4.032 GPA and plans on studying pre-medicine at Macomb.

Victoria Cannon – East Detroit H.S.
Cannon plans on playing softball and volleyball during
her time at Macomb. Cannon played softball under Coach Tim Woelkers and volleyball under Coach Kevin Nugent. In volleyball she has received All-Conference, All-County, and Team MVP honors, while in softball she led the team with a .475 on-base percentage. She is currently undecided on a major.

Amber Gelinas – St. Thomas of Villanova (Ontario, Canada)
Gelinas played varsity softball under Coach John Trelfa at St. Thomas of Villanova as an infielder, outfielder and pitcher. This past season, she hit .320 with 17 runs and 19 RBI. Gelinas represented Team Canada in the 2010 Little League Senior Softball World Series. She also plays softball with the Canton Thunderbirds. Gelinas plans on majoring in chemistry.

Both Jessie and Sammie played varsity softball under
Coach Kevin Mahn at St. Clair High School. Jessie was an outfielder and catcher in high school. She received All-Conference honors in 2010. This summer she will be playing with the Motor City Madness. Sammie played pitcher and outfield in high school. This summer she will be playing with the St. Clair Stars. They join Lindsay Taylor as the second and third recruits from St. Clair High School.

MONARCHS FALL IN DISTRICT H CHAMPIONSHIP
The Macomb Community College women’s softball team fell 9-3 to Oakland CC in the Championship Game of the District H Tournament. Megan Dyer and Kayla Kubiski were both named to the All-Tournament team.
The Monarchs started the tournament on Thursday with an 11-4 victory over Alpena CC before falling to Oakland in the semifinals. Macomb defeated Mott 14-6 in the quarterfinals of the loser’s bracket, in their third game of the afternoon. On Friday, the Monarchs defeated Alpena 10-0, to advance to the finals of the loser’s bracket. In the finals, Macomb defeated Lakeland (OH) CC 4-1 to advance to the Championship against Oakland CC. The Monarchs had to defeat Oakland two times to win the District H Championship. Macomb won the first game 10-7 in eight innings, to create a one game winner-take-all championship game. Playing their fourth game of the day and seventh in the last two, the Monarchs did not have the legs to keep up with Oakland, as the Raiders won 9-3.
SOFTBALL FALLS IN MCCAA TOURNAMENT
The Macomb Community College softball team won eight of their last nine games to finish in second place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference. Macomb had to sweep two game sets at Mott and at home against Henry Ford to advance to the MCCAA Tournament.
On Friday, Macomb traveled to Mott, who was previously in second place in the conference. Macomb outscored the Lady Bears by a combined score of 17-4. Megan Dyer pitched two tremendous games, leading the Monarchs to both victories.
On Saturday, Macomb needed two victories against Henry Ford to qualify for the MCCAA Tournament. Macomb started the game strong with a two-run home run by Kayla Kubiski. Those would be the only runs scored by the Monarchs until the seventh inning. Trailing 5-2 going into the inning, the bats came alive as Kubiski had a two-run triple, followed by an RBI double by Shanel Johnstone, to tie the game. Kory Farmer, who was on third after the double, scored the winning run on a wild pitch, to give the Monarchs a 6-5 victory.
The nightcap started just like the first, as Kubiski had a two-run home run in the first inning. Johnstone and Paige Johnson each had RBI’s in the third inning, as the Monarchs cruised to an easy 13-4 victory.
Playing in their fifth game in three days, Macomb fell 5-3 to Muskegon in the first round of the MCCAA Tournament. The Monarchs scored three runs in the seventh inning to try to rebound from a 5 run deficit, but could not complete the comeback. Megan Dyer, pitching her fifth straight game, picked up the loss despite a strong performance.
Macomb’s next game is on Thursday, May 12th at 10 am in Battle Creek against Alpena in the District H Tournament.
MONARCHS SPLIT WITH DELTA
The Macomb Community College women’s softball team split a two game set with Delta on Sunday to remain in second place in the MCCAA Eastern Conference. The Monarchs lost the first game 3-0, before coming back to win the second game 5-0.
The Monarch bats were as cold as the weather in the first game, getting shutout for only the third time this year. Megan Dyer pitched a complete game, giving up three runs, while picking up the loss. Macomb had opportunities throughout the whole game, but could not convert.
The second game was the pitching debut of Dana Orlanski, who pitched a complete game shutout to pick up the victory. Orlanski came to the team by was of the baseball/softball class, when the Monarch’s were having injury issues. Paige Johnson contributed with a two run double.
The Monarchs next game is on April 19th at 3 pm in Flint against Mott CC.
MONARCHS SWEEP HENRY FORD
The Macomb Community College women’s softball team swept Henry Ford on Tuesday afternoon in Dearborn. Macomb won the games with scores of 13-0 and 18-0. Emily Wickerham pitched a complete game three hitter in the first game, and Megan Dyer pitched a complete game one-hitter on the finale.
Wickerham also had a strong game at the plate going 4-4 with three runs and three RBI. Shanel Johnstone was 2-4 for the game with five RBI and a run scored. The second game was much of the same story as Whitney Weston went 4-5 with four runs and five RBI. Morgan Thomson had three RBI and scored two runs in the game.
Macomb’s next game is battle for first place, as Oakland CC visits Macomb on April 13th at 3 pm.
MACOMB TAKES THREE OF FOUR
The Macomb Community College softball team went to their home away from home, Warren Woods Tower High School, to play four games this weekend against Alpena CC. The Monarchs won the first three games of the weekend, before dropping the finale.
On Saturday, wet field conditions caused Macomb to move their games against Alpena to Tower High School. Emily Wickerham pitched a complete game, leading Macomb to the 7-4 victory. The second game, however, is when the fireworks began. Macomb won the game 20-10, starting the game scoring eight runs in the first innings. Megan Dyer and Kory Farmer had home runs in the game.
On Sunday, with the teams still playing at Tower H.S. the teams split the two games. Macomb won the first game 3-2, behind another complete game from Wickerham. The Monarchs, fell in the last game of the weekend 6-5. Macomb never led in the game, but kept battling throughout, and had chances late to tie or take the lead.
The Monarchs travel to Dearborn to play Henry Ford CC on April 12th at 3 pm.
MONARCHS SWEEP SKIPPERS
The Macomb Community College softball team improved their conference record to 3-1, with a sweep of St. Clair CC. Emily Wickerham pitched two complete game shutouts, as the Monarchs won with scores of 6-0 and 1-0.
Wickerham gave up four hits in the first game for the easy victory. The second game was more challenging as Wickerham pitched out jams in the second and fifth innings. Whitney Weston scored the only run in the game on a Shanel Johnstone double in the first inning.
Macomb next plays on Thursday, April 7th hosting Delta CC at 3 pm at the Sports & Expo Center.
MACOMB OPENS CONFERENCE WITH SPLIT
The Macomb Community College softball team opened the conference slate splitting two games with the visiting Mott Bears. The Monarchs lost the first game, 2-0, before rebounding to win the second game 4-3 in nine innings.
The opener was a close game throughout, with Macomb getting out pitched in the 2-0 loss. Emily Wicherham pitched a complete game, despite taking the loss. The second game was a different story. Mott started fast taking a 1-0 lead on a throwing error by Macomb. The Monarchs scored two runs in the bottom of the second, to take their first lead of the day. After the Bears took the lead back 3-2, Kory Farmer hit a solo home run, in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams squandered opportunities late in the game until Shanel Johnstone hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Whitney Weston in the ninth inning for the walk-off victory.
Macomb next plays on April 5th at 3 pm against St. Clair County CC at the Sports & Expo Center.
MONARCHS SHOW PROMISE IN FLORIDA
Macomb Community College’s softball team traveled to Florida over Spring Break to play some teams from across the country. The team returned breaking even with a 7-7 record.
Whitney Weston hit .500 for the trip, including five triples and scoring 22 runs. Shanel Johnstone led the Monarchs with 20 RBI, including a home run. Paige Johnson hit .388 for the trip, with four doubles, a triple, a home run, and 12 RBI. Emily Wickerham had four wins on the trip, with a 2.20 ERA and 32 K’s. Megan Dyer also pitched on the trip posting a 3.23 ERA and 25 K’s.
MACOMB PRODUCES ANOTHER ALL-AMERICAN
On Monday, June 14, 2010, the NJCAA announced its
list of Softball All-American recipients. Korrine Farmer from St. Clair Shores-Lakeview was named to the NJCAA All-American Third Team. She already earned All-Region, All-MCCAA, and MCCAA Eastern Conference 1st Team Honors. Farmer helped the Macomb Softball team come within one game of the Regional Championship game. She also was the catalyst for a late season run that gave Macomb fourteen straight wins; finishing the season in third place in the MCCAA and winning the most games (36) in Macomb’s history!
The 5’6” freshman centerfielder roamed the outfield and recorded 46 putouts and 10 assists with a fielding percentage of .903. Her bat truly created offensive mayhem…in 153 appearances at the plate; she recorded 67 hits, 9 doubles and 6 triples. Farmer scored 36 runs, produced 63 RBI’s (17th in the nation), 9 homeruns with a .438 batting average and a .482 on base percentage.
