Diaz Signs With Monarchs
Alycea Diaz from Hazel Park High School signed to play for Macomb this upcoming season. Diaz was named her team MVP this season as well as being All-OAA and All-Area.
Besides success on the court, Diaz also was a standout on the track. Diaz set the school record at Hazel Park High School for the 100m dash, and qualified for the MHSAA State Championship.
Diaz is an excellent point guard who shows great floor presence and a smooth stroke from the outside. Head Coach Sam Lamb said, "I am very excited to get the opportunity to coach such a versatile player. She is very smart and gifted athletically. With her knowledge of the game and her relentless work ethic, I know Alycea is going to be a huge part of this program for the next couple years."
Pair of Sophomores Sign With St Mary's of Omaha
Jessica See and Courtney Holdsworth have both decided to attend the College of St. Mary's in Omaha, Nebraska. The College of St. Mary's is affiliated with the NAIA and both have received athletic scholarships to play under head coach Kevin Lein, where they will fulfill their final two years of eligibility while pursuing their degree in Nursing.
Jessica See was a two-time Second Team All-MCCAA selection while at Macomb. She also led the nation in free throw shooting percentage (92.9%). See led the Monarchs in points, assists, and minutes, and was the catalyst for most of the offensive production. Head Coach Sam Lamb said of See, "Jessica is an outstanding player and person. She shows unbelievable dedication and hard work in everything she does. I am very proud of her success and I know St. Mary's is getting quite a competitor."
Courtney Holdsworth was an Honorable Mention All-MCCAA performer this season at Macomb. Holdsworth made huge strides this season and was second in points and led the team in rebounding. She was the most consistent threat the Monarchs had inside and will be tough to replace. Lamb said of Holdsworth, "Courtney has a vibrant personality and was a true pleasure to coach. She is an excellent leader and will definitely leave a hole inside next season that we are going to have to fill."
Monarchs Sign Smith and Skiba
On April 24th, the Macomb Women's basketball team had two new freshman signees, Meredith Smith from Utica Ford High School and Jamie Skiba from Utica High School. Along with the new freshman, five returning players also signed their letters of intent. Korea Jackson (Mount Clemens) and Lauren Quinn will be listed as freshman but both were with the team last year, Jackson had season ending surgery and Quinn was the team manager. The returning sophomores are Cassie Patrick (Fraser), Amanda Theut (Cardinal Mooney), and Kisha Adray (Anchor Bay).
Coach Lamb is extremely excited about the way the team is forming. "The two recruits will fit in nicely with what we are trying to accomplish next season. Meredith is a lethal outside shooter and should be able to stretch the defense, and Jamie is an excellent athlete that can defend and will hopefully bring some versatility to the backcourt," said Lamb. Also the additions of Jackson and Quinn should add some needed speed to the Monarchs guards, who plan on pushing the tempo next season. "The core group that we have coming back is ideal for the type of uptempo style we hope to showcase next season. We are still actively recruiting a lot of other parts that we hope to bring into the program, but we feel like the future is very bright with the talent we have assembled so far!"
