Registration is open for the fall semester of the Society of Active Retirees (SOAR) Macomb, a lifelong learning initiative offered by Macomb Community College.  From Oct. 10 through Nov. 17, SOAR Macomb is offering a collection of 55 non-credit courses, typically two hours in length, with topics spanning current events, the arts, health and wellness, film discussion, hobbies, history and more. Since it was introduced in fall 2014, the program has attracted approximately 1,400 learners. It is expected to draw 350 participants this fall.

“The love of learning is the common denominator of those involved in SOAR Macomb,” said William Wood, cultural affairs director, Macomb Community College. “The lifelong learning program offers numerous opportunities for area residents to explore areas of interest, discover hidden talents and just have fun.”

For a registration fee of $75, participants choose up to 10 classes held during the six-week program.  The course offerings are continually refined based on suggestions from previous participants.  Courses are taught by current and retired Macomb Community College staff, as well as other professionals who are experts in their fields.

One of the courses being offered this fall is FBI 101, in which agents from the Detroit office will discuss the FBI’s mission and crime prevention tips and conduct an interactive fingerprinting demonstration. In the course Jazz ... Southern Style, drummer RJ Spangler introduces students to the wide variety of jazz styles from ragtime to Dixieland, Cajun, zydeco and more.  A wide range of history courses will also be offered, spanning Pompeii Revisited to Custer & the Battle of Little Bighorn.

Most of SOAR Macomb’s classes are held at the Macomb University Center on the college’s Center Campus at 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. Those that are held in other locations are noted in the course catalog.

Catalogs containing complete programming for fall SOAR Macomb class offerings have been mailed to many area residents and are also available by calling 586.286.2106 or by email at For more information, visit
