SOAR Macomb brings successful program to Macomb County for the first time

Next month, Macomb Community College will launch the first classes as part of its partnership with the Society of Active Retirees (SOAR), a community-based, nonprofit lifelong learning initiative affiliated with Wayne State University and the Elderhostel Institute Network.

SOAR Macomb, which is modeled after SOAR of Oakland County, will offer a wide variety of non-credit courses aimed at providing opportunities for social and cultural enrichment and personal growth. The courses will be offered in two six-week semesters each year, with the first beginning Oct. 6. A spring semester will begin April 2015.

“SOAR Macomb expands the ability of the college to address the needs of dedicated learners of all ages, particularly active retirees,” said Christine Guarino, Macomb’s director of cultural and community affairs. “SOAR Macomb represents an exciting new partnership that builds on the college’s strengths in new ways, providing real value to our community.”

All courses will be offered at the Macomb University Center on the college’s Center Campus at 44575 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. An introductory membership fee of $50 allows individuals to take up to 10 courses during the upcoming fall semester, space permitting. While the program was designed with retirees in mind, membership in SOAR Macomb is open to anyone committed to lifelong learning.

SOAR Macomb courses cover a wide variety of subjects including creative writing, literature, United States and world history, cooking and selling on eBay.  Those teaching the courses include current and former faculty of Macomb and other colleges in the region, as well as local professionals passionate about sharing their areas of expertise. A complete schedule of classes is available here.
