While the university has shown tremendous growth and change, the core mission has stayed the same: to deliver an undergraduate and graduate education that prepares students with a portfolio of skills and values necessary for success in the workplace and society.

Through unique and distinctive academic experiences, Oakland prepares students to make meaningful and substantial contributions to the community and the workplace. OU offers hundreds of bachelor, masters, PhD and certificate programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Human Services, Engineering and Computer Science, Health Sciences, Nursing and the Honors College.

Oakland University and Macomb College are welcoming students into the state’s first concurrent enrollment program. Named Macomb 2 Oakland (M2O), the program is the centerpiece of a partnership between the two higher education institutions to bring more meaningful degree-program options directly to the residents of Macomb County.

U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks Oakland University among national public universities. The Princeton Review included Oakland University in its first edition of The Best Midwestern Colleges. Oakland is featured among the top 150 schools in 11 states along with Indiana University, Notre Dame, Northwestern, University of Chicago, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recognizes OU as one of the country's 110 doctoral research-intensive universities giving graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to work directly on research projects with expert faculty.
