Clinton Township – The New York based arts management firm, Young Concert Artists, presents soprano Carolina Ullrich in a recital at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, in Stage II, Sunday, January 17, at 4 p.m.; tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For tickets call 586.286.2222.

The Young Concert Artists (YCA) founded in 1961, as a professional non-profit organization, dedicates itself to discovering and launching the careers of exceptional, but unknown, young musicians from all over the world by providing important debuts and performing experience at no cost to the artists.

Each year the YCA holds Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which differ in an important way from other competitions. The participants, representing a variety of instruments and voice and chamber groups, compete against a standard of excellence – not each other. There is no specified limit to the number of artists who can win. The Jury members’ only criteria are extraordinary talent, technique, and impact upon the listener.

Winner of the 2008/09 YCA International Auditions, Ms. Ullrich makes her 2009/10 season recital debuts in the Young Concert Artists Series at Merkin Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, along with performances at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, The Paramount Theatre (VT), and in Germany at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and in the Herrenchiemsee Festival.  Also this season, Ms. Ullrich will record a CD of songs of Joaquín Turina for the Naxos label.

Ms. Ullrich began singing opera in Chile in Santiago’s Teatro Municipal, where she performed the roles of Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Despina in Cosí fan tutte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Soeur Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites.  She has appeared in concert as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Adele in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Ännchen in Weber’s Der Freischütz, and Hannchen in Lortzing’s Die Opernprobe.  Ms. Ullrich has sung in Bavaria’s Bayerische Theater and at the Prinzregenten Theater in Munich.  Her oratorio appearances include Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Stuttgart Orchestra under Helmuth Rilling in Germany and Italy.  Other solo appearances include Haydn’s The Seasons and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio throughout Europe, as well as Mozart concert arias in Japan.

As a part of her program at the Macomb Center, Ms. Ullrich will offer a free Master Class for young music students to learn techniques and interpretations from her personally.  The Master Class will be held Saturday, January 16 at 3 p.m. Although the Master Class is free,  pre-registration is required and participation may be limited.  To register for the Master Class, please call 586.286.2044 or visit www.MacombCenter.com/EducationEnrichment/
