Macomb Offers Summer Programs for Youth

Macomb Community College offers a wide variety of educational, career exploration, enrichment and sports programs for young people during the summer months.

The college’s popular Career Academies return this summer, offering area teens an opportunity for hands-on exploration of a number of careers. The academies each run three to five days and are led by Macomb instructors with a focus on one particular career area. Academies offered this summer include law enforcement, culinary/pastry arts, fire service, media & communication arts, robotics/design, biotechnology, renewable energy and two veterinary technician programs. All of the academies begin the week of June 21, with the exception of the second veterinary technician and the biotechnology academies, which begin June 29 and July 6, respectively. Students participating in the academies must be at least 14 years old, with the exception of the law enforcement and fire service academies, which require students to be at least 16 years old.

The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts offers four weeklong workshops for students. The Drama Workshop, open to students in grades 1-12, runs July 12-16. The Flute Workshop, grades 7-12, is July 26-30. The Show Choir Workshop, grades 7-12, is Aug. 1-7. The Children’s Chorus Workshop, grades 2-9, is Aug. 23-27.

Macomb’s College 4 Kids program offers weeklong classes in a variety of topics in the areas of art and drawing, stage and film, beginning piano, science and engineering. Class listings and schedules are available at www.macomb.edu/cce.

Macomb’s Athletic Department offers a variety of camps aimed at high school and middle school boys’ and girls’ basketball and volleyball teams. The department also offers individual skills camps in basketball. A camp for boys, ages 7-14, runs June 21-25. A camp for boys and girls, ages 10-14, runs June 28 through July 1.
