Macomb Community College will celebrate the accomplishments of those graduates completing degree requirements at the end of the Winter 2010 Semester, to which it is awarding approximately 1,396 associate degrees, at its 83rd commencement on Friday, May 14, 7 p.m., at the Macomb Sports & Expo Center on South Campus.
The Most Distinguished Graduate and commencement speaker is Rita Sadik, 21, of Sterling Heights. Sadik is graduating with a 3.96 grade point average, which, coupled with a written essay, helped earn her the honor of serving as commencement speaker. She is receiving an associate degree in general studies, concentration in math, and intends to transfer to Oakland University and earn bachelor and master’s degrees in nursing. Born in Iraq, Sadik moved to the U.S. with her family when she was six and learned to speak, read and write English in the first grade.
Also graduating at the end of Macomb’s winter semester and participating in the May commencement are Kerry Jesiel and her 18-year-old son Tyler. Kerry, of Sterling Heights, is a single mother of five who is receiving an associate of general studies degree. She is also a student in Macomb’s two-year Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program and intends to transfer to Saginaw Valley State University and earn a master’s degree in occupational therapy after completing Macomb’s program next year. Son Tyler began his studies at Macomb at 15 as an early-admission high school student and took classes full-time at both Macomb and Henry Ford II High School, from which he will be receiving his diploma in June. He is graduating from Macomb with an associate of science degree, concentration in math, and has been accepted at the University of Michigan College of Engineering for the fall semester.
