At its 81st commencement ceremony on Friday, May 15, Macomb Community College will recognize the achievements of students who have collectively earned approximately 1,400 associate degrees at the close of the Winter 2009 Semester. Addressing them and the rest of the audience in the South Campus Sports & Expo Center that evening will be Jessica Poirier, of St. Clair Shores, Most Distinguished Graduate for May 2009
Poirier is graduating with 3.9 grade point average and an associate degree after majoring in theoretical physics, with a minor in cognitive science. The 2006 graduate of Fitzgerald Public Schools plans to transfer to Duke or Cornell universities to pursue a bachelor and doctoral degrees in physics. Poirier, who intends to become a physicist and work on projects of global significance, is fluent in Italian, is an advanced student in German and Spanish, and has begun studies in Greek, Russian and French. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the American Physical Society and the Dante Alighieri Society.
Poirier was selected Most Distinguished Graduate based on her academic accomplishments, an essay detailing her future plans and an interview with a selection committee comprised of college faculty and staff.
Macomb Community College’s 81st commencement will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at the Macomb Sports & Expo Center on the college’s South Campus, Twelve Mile and Hayes roads, Warren.
