Macomb Community College will mark Armed Forces Day and salute those who served the country in the military during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16. The final event in The Sixties: A Decade that Defined a Generation, a program series at the Lorenzo Cultural Center at the college which examined the key events of that decade, the Tribute to Service will include a special focus on those who served in the Vietnam War.
The program will feature Major Gen. Scott G. West, commanding general of the TACOM Life Cycle Command, 338th Army band and the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 154, Color Guard, The Point Team.
Those who are currently serving in the military, veterans and their loves ones, and community members from all generations are invited to attend the tribute ceremony, which will include a video presentation of local Vietnam veterans offering their reflections on the war and their own service.
In addition to a number of speaker presentations on various aspects of the war, the Michigan Moving Wall, a memorial tribute to Michigan men and women who lost their life during the Vietnam War, and a collection of items loaned by local veterans have been on display during the Sixties program series.
“The memorial room has a very somber tone to it,” said Geary Maiuri, dean of Community & Student Enrichment at Macomb. “Thousands of people have visited that room during the series, including many who lived through those times. And, just as importantly, many local school children have visited the center and gained insight into the events of their parents’ or grandparents’ generation through these exhibits and programs.”
While the tribute event and admission to the cultural center are free, advance registration is required.
The Lorenzo Cultural Center is located on the Macomb Community College Center Campus, Garfield and M-59, Clinton Township. The exhibits are open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays through May 16.
