Release Date:
November 1, 2007

The Macomb Cultural Center is presenting nearly 20 events throughout November that explore the history, romance and legacy of the Great Lakes as part of Great Lakes, Great Stories: Michigan's Maritime Heritage. In addition to a focus on shipwreck history and exploration, programs include a look at the role and legacy of lighthouses and shipping, Michigan legend and lore, as well as living history experiences.

On Friday, Nov. 16, 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Frederick Stonehouse, author of more than 30 books on maritime history, presents Women on the Lakes, recounting the untold tales of the women who have filled virtually every job of the Great Lakes maritime trades, from deep sea diver, ship's captain, lighthouse keeper and rescuer. On Saturday, Nov. 17, 2 p.m., Stonehouse shares the ghost lore of the Great Lakes from the early 1700s to the present in Haunted Lakes, including tales of ghosts on ships and in lighthouses to sea serpents and underwater spirits, as well as ships that "talk" to their captains to specters who dwell on the shore.

A variety of exhibits are also on display through Dec. 2, including Great Lakes, Great Stories, artifacts and multimedia that highlight the lakes' formation, their role as a superhighway and preservation; Era of Elegance, artifacts and photos from early 20th century steamship travel; Great Lakes China, a "tour" of Michigan's port cities through pictorial souvenir china; Michigan's Great Lights, a look at lighthouses through photos, artifacts and a cutaway of a lighthouse; Exotic Aquatics of the Great Lakes Region, an interactive display about invasive species; and Life on the Lakes, showcasing the lakes' ecosystem. Exhibits are open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
