Macomb Community College president announces retirement; Board of trustees begins search process for successor

Release Date:
September 4, 2007

The president of Macomb Community College, Albert L. Lorenzo, has informed the college's board of trustees of his intention to retire from the presidency by the conclusion of his current contract, which runs through September 2008. Lorenzo assumed the office in July 1979, and is the fourth and longest-serving president in Macomb's 53-year history. He is also currently the longest-serving community college president in Michigan.

"I'm dedicated to maintaining the momentum at the college while the board of trustees leads the process for selecting the next president," Lorenzo said. "By completing the search for my successor while I am still at the college, both the board and I hope to keep things moving forward and allow for a smooth transition for Macomb's next leader."

Macomb's board of trustees has reviewed the capabilities of consulting firms available to assist in the search for a new president and has selected the services offered by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). ACCT is a nonprofit educational organization of the governing boards of more than 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States.

The board of trustees is also forming a committee to assist with the search process, with the chair of the college's board, Nancy Falcone Sullivan, chairing the search committee. Further details regarding the presidential search will be announced after the ACCT consultant and search committee conclude a series of meetings in early October designed to codify criteria, outline steps and establish timelines for the process.

"For nearly 30 years, Dr. Lorenzo has successfully shepherded the development of Macomb Community College into an indispensable community resource through a keen understanding of the transformative power of education, as well as a deep connection with the community," said Board Chair Nancy Falcone Sullivan. "The board of trustees is committed to protecting and enhancing this legacy with a presidential search process that identifies the right leader to keep moving Macomb forward."
