The Macomb Culinary Institute at Macomb Community College, in partnership with English Gardens, is sponsoring the third annual Gingerbread House Competition to benefit Forgotten Harvest, a food rescue organization that works to ease hunger in southeast Michigan.
The Gingerbread House Competition is open to anyone, with judging in three categories: high school students, college students and an open category. Competition rules and entry forms are available at the English Gardens store at 44850 Garfield, at M-59, in Clinton Township. Those participating in the competition must drop off their gingerbread house to this English Gardens location on Friday, Nov. 13.
All the houses are donated to the competition, displayed at English Gardens during regular business hours through Nov. 22, and sold via silent auction, with all proceeds donated to Forgotten Harvest. The houses will be judged by local pastry chefs, and the winners will be announced and awarded medals during a ceremony at English Gardens at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
“Last year, we had more than 40 entries, and the quality of the houses was excellent,” said Francois Faloppa, pastry chef and a professor at the Macomb Culinary Institute. “I am eagerly looking forward to seeing this year’s creations.”
In 2008, the Gingerbread House Competition raised more than $2,800 for Forgotten Harvest.
As in past years, culinary students at Macomb will be participating in the competition, including more than a dozen of Faloppa’s students in an ongoing pastry class.
