Kim Renas, a Warren resident and Macomb Community College’s head indoor track and cross country coach, men’s and women’s teams, has been named National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year for 2011.
The honor followed Macomb’s women’s indoor track team taking fourth place in the national meet held in Texas in March.
“It’s a team award,” says Renas, who retired in 2009 from Anchor Bay Schools after 32 years of teaching. “I couldn’t do it without everyone involved in our program - the student athletes, my co-coach Das Campbell and all the support from the school.”
During Renas’ 29-year coaching career at Macomb, nearly 70 of his student athletes have made All-American, eight have been national champions and five teams have won national championships. He was also named coach of the year in 1983 and 1995.
“I always wanted to be the best athlete I could be, and I always wanted to be a coach,” says Renas, a high school and college track star who attended Central Michigan University on an athletic scholarship and stills runs most every day. “My favorite part of the day is getting on the track.”
While receiving coach of the year honors for the third time was a thrill for the track veteran, he took the most pride in the performance of his student athletes.
“They were up against athletes of international caliber, and they ran as well as anyone,” says Renas. “Taking fourth place in the nationals is pretty significant.”
