May 8, 2012

Macomb Community College is celebrating the accomplishments of those graduates completing degree requirements at the end of the winter 2012 semester, to which it is awarding approximately 1,556 associate degrees, at its 87th commencement on Friday, May 11, 7 p.m., at the Macomb Sports & Expo Center on its South Campus in Warren.

This ceremony’s Most Distinguished Graduate is Izabela Surowiec, 29, of Clinton Township, and originally from Poland. At age 19, Surowiec moved to the U. S. without any knowledge of the English language, two suitcases and just $200. Within 10 years time, she graduated high school, obtained U.S. citizenship, began her own business and is now receiving an associate degree in law enforcement with nearly a perfect academic record.

Now fluent in English, Suroweic will also serve as the commencement speaker, focusing her remarks on achieving the “American Dream.”

Another notable graduate at this semester’s commencement is Jenna Schauer, 18, of Warren, who is receiving an associate of arts degree by way of the Macomb Early College program. Schauer’s participation in Macomb’s commencement will be about three weeks prior to her high school graduation from Tower High School in the Warren Woods district.  She will continue her post-secondary education at Michigan State University, beginning in the fall as a sophomore due to her participation in Macomb Early College.
