March 10, 2009

The Center for Continuing Education at Macomb Community College is launching a new training program for those interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant.

Macomb is offering free informational workshops on the program and on employment possibilities as a CNA at 10 a.m. – noon or 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, or 10 a.m. – noon or 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, on the college’s South Campus, 12 Mile and Hayes, in Warren.

The 128-hour CNA training program features both classroom and hands-on practical training in the college’s newly renovated Continuing Education Center for Health Careers on South Campus. The first CNA training class began March 9, with additional classes, both daytime and evenings, to follow every 8 weeks.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Labor, there is a 28 percent job growth rate for CNAs, with an average pay rate of $10-$15.

Students who successfully complete the CNA program at Macomb will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Test, which is required to earn the CNA designation. In addition, students will receive a Certificate in Dementia Competencies as part of the CNA training.

“There is a significant ongoing need for CNAs to work in hospitals, long-term care facilities and through certified home health care agencies,” said Michelle Valin, coordinator of the CNA program at Macomb. “This training will prepare a student to be able to fill one of those jobs.”
