• Review course materials and lecture notes. Overlooked information tends to be a common source for student confusion.
• Contact the professor and classmates. Take advantage of sharing notes and discussing problems with others. Instructors are your best resource for clarifying assignments and obtaining details about upcoming examinations.
• Outline questions and problem areas to discuss with a tutor. Tutors assist students with finding answers.
• Bring assignments and course materials (textbook, notes, syllabus, etc.) to tutoring sessions. Tutors are better able to clarify directions and provide additional details on what is expected if they have all the information.
• When writing a paper, compose a rough draft before attending an appointment. Tutors cannot write papers for students.
• If applicable, obtain a calculator and learn how to utilize its functions. There are many different kinds available and tutors cannot know how to use all of them.

Important Points to Keep in Mind for a Successful Tutoring Session 

• Do not wait until the last minute. Plan ahead and seek assistance early. Tutors cannot help students cram the day before a test. The mind needs time to assimilate information. Several smaller sessions with practice in between is more beneficial then one long session.
• Please be patient. Tutors will help as many students as possible, as quickly as possible.
• Tutors are available to provide guidance with assignments but they cannot complete students' homework.
• Tutors may not assist students with take home quizzes or tests.
• Students who have missed several classes may not find tutoring to be helpful. Coursework should to be attempted and lecture notes obtained - tutors are not expected to "catch you up."
