Special Services Student Rights and Responsibilities

Notify Special Services of disability status and request accommodations each semester. Certain special accommodations require extra time.
Confidentiality
All records are kept confidential and will not be shared without written permission of student		 Letter of Accommodation
A Classroom Assistance Letter will be provided outlining specific accommodations individualized to each student.
Academic Support
Many forms of interactive learning tools and tutoring groups available for no charge		 Follow-up with Faculty
Provide a copy of the Classroom Assistance Letter to faculty. Communication with instructors is a key to classroom success.
Assistive Technology
Reading Edge, Optelec Vision, FM System, Plato, Kurzweil 3000, Braille Printer, Jaws, Tactile Image Enhancer		 Academic Support
Special Services will provide referrals to the Learning Center and other academic support centers. Students referred for tutoring must arrive on time. Excessive absences can lead to dismissal of tutoring services.
Alternative Testing Formats
Extended time, reduced distraction environment, reader and scribe depending on documented need		 Future Scheduling of Classes
Contact Special Services for an appointment to discuss educational plans and curriculum changes each semester. Personalized academic evaluations are available upon request.

 

Institutional Rights & Responsibilities

Maintain the college academic standards
Discuss the student's eligibility with diagnosing professionals, with the signed consent of the student.
Select from among equally effective/appropriate accommodations, adjustments and/or auxiliary aids in consultation with the student.
Deny requests for accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids when disability documentation does not confirm a specific disability, fails to verify the need for the requested services or is not provided in a timely manner.

Deny requests for accommodations, adjustment, and/or auxiliary aids that are inappropriate or unreasonable based on disability documentation including any that:

  • Pose a direct threat to the health and safety of others
  • Constitute a substantial change or alteration of an essential course element/program standard
