Pompeii Food and Drink Volunteer Fieldwork Opportunity

Pompeii, the city destroyed by Vesuvius, provides a unique opportunity for study of the ancient Roman world. Millions of visitors each year are rapidly causing deterioration of the remains of this civilization. Our project aims to preserve records of how the people of 79 AD obtained, prepared, and consumed food and drink. Volunteers assist staff in cataloguing and recording all instances of food and drink usage by the early Romans in the volcano-destroyed city of Pompeii, Italy. Volunteers measure, photograph, record, and provide data entry into a computer database being created by the project. Volunteers provide their own transportation to Naples, Italy and then the weekly fee pays for the remainder of their expenses - all admissions to the excavations, all lodging, as well as breakfast and dinner daily. This project is operated by a consortium of professors from universities and colleges including University of Maryland, University of Georgia, and Western Oregon University.
