Pompeii Food and Drink: Purpose of Project

The Pompeii Food and Drink Project offers an unequaled opportunity to explore the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy with a staff of historians, archaeologists, architects, and classicists.  The research goal is to analyze the patterns of daily life through a non-invasive study of the structures that are associated with the storage distribution, preparation, serving, and consumption of food and drink.  Volunteers measure, sketch, and photograph food and drink related features in kitchens and dining rooms, restaurants, stores, supply warehouses, vineyards, and farms under the guidance of the professional staff.  Pompeii is an endangered site, and completing our research is urgent.  Our next trip to Pompeii, in June and July, 2010, will be our ninth year of on-site research in Pompeii.

Would you like to be an investigator for a couple of weeks and see this ancient city from behind-the-scenes, more in depth than a fleeting tourist?  Do you want to know more?  You may make your reservation for 2010 now by visiting our website, www.pompeii-food-and-drink.org

If you would like further information about the project, here in Michigan, you may contact Mary Meier, Instructor Anthropology and Archaeology at Macomb Community College.  Email:  meierm@macomb.edu.

2010 Dates:  June 20th through July 10th.
