Bridging the Gap Through Knowledge & Understanding: Assessing the Needs of Minority Students at the Community College
Sonya Berkley, Sociology, MCC
Elton Weintz, History, MCC

Andrew Hacker once described race relations in the United States as "Black and White, Separate and Unequal." Nowhere has this been more evident than in our nation's educational system where the academic divide between black and white students is ever increasing.

This workshop is designed to introduce various instructional methods and techniques to better serve the academic needs of Macomb's multicultural student population. Focusing primarily on the African American experience, the facilitators will examine how these students evaluated their learning environment at Macomb. In assessing their experiences, the facilitators will present several theoretical models (social, cultural, and economic) to explain the perceived "gap" between the instructional needs of white and minority students. The facilitators will also offer various teaching and learning methodologies that can be utilized to create an environment more conducive to learning. Additionally, this workshop will address African-American students' learning differences versus European-American students' learning styles. Various strategies and interactive experiential exercises that enhance understanding and tolerance will be incorporated into the presentation. Several of the activities included are: Walk Apart-Walk together, The Name Tag Game, Cultural Scavenger Hunt, Teamwork Blind Fold Game and Gender Differences in Learning Styles Exercise.

The facilitators will also discuss insights as history and sociology instructors of incidents and examples that will help faculty and staff understand how African-American students maneuver through academic situations. Communication styles, barriers, advantages and critical mass will be explored.
