REQUIREMENTS

For the clinical portion of the program, students must have their health history form (physical form) on file in the Health & Public Services office (Center Campus E-219).

Physical Exam

A health history and physical exam are required before start of the program. Clinical agencies require that students have a current physical exam to practice in the agency. Students who have not submitted the appropriate form will not be allowed to start their scheduled clinical placement.

If students drop out of the program for more than one semester, or withdraw for health reasons, they must have another physical exam and have the appropriate form on file prior to resuming clinical experiences.

Tuberculosis Skin Test or Chest X-ray

This is required as part of the initial physical exam, and every 12 month thereafter. It is the student’s responsibility to submit the documentation at the appropriate times.

Flu Shot

All students are required to have a flu shot and records must be on file in order to continue in the clinical setting.

Urine 10 Panel Drug Screen

Documentation must be submitted PRIOR TO the beginning of the program for the following:

  1. Medical documentation of TITERS for LEVEL OF IMMUNITY for Rubella, Rubeola and Varicella. Copies of the lab results must be submitted. These should include the date, type of test and level of immunity.

All health workers who might transmit Rubella to pregnant women should be immunized against the disease. Immunizations must have been administered at least two weeks prior to starting clinical experiences. Pregnancy is a contraindication to vaccination against measles or rubella. Vaccine should not be given to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant within three (3) months of vaccination.

  1. Medical documentation verifying AT LEAST THE FIRST TWO injections of the Hepatitis B immunization series prior to first clinical placement. Verification of the THIRD injection must be submitted at the appropriate time. If a student has been exposed to Hepatitis B or had been previously immunized of Hepatitis B, a copy of the lab report indication immunity is all that needs to be submitted.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Public Health Service, Center for Disease Control, Hepatitis B infection is the major infectious occupational hazard for health care workers. Risks among health care professionals are often highest during the professional training period. For this reason, it is recommended that vaccination be completed during training in schools of nursing and other health professionals.

Hepatitis B vaccine is given as a series of three intramuscular injections, with the second and third doses given 1 and 6 months after the first dose. Post-vaccination testing should be done between 1 and 6 months after completion of the vaccine series to provide definitive information of response to the vaccine. The deltoid (arm) is the recommended site for Hepatitis B vaccination of adults; immunogenicity of vaccine for adults is substantially lower when injections are given in the buttock.

Basic Life Support (CPR)

Prior to the first clinical course at Macomb, students are required to have current CPR certification. Current certification must be maintained throughout the program. Students should be prepared to show evidence of current CPR certification anytime they are in clinical facilities.

Health Insurance

Students must have hospitalization insurance, as neither the hospital nor the college insures the student against accidents of illness, even if it occurs as a result of, or while working with, a patient.

Students are responsibility for the costs of any treatments resulting from injury to themselves in the clinical setting. In accordance with the affiliation agreement wit most clinical sites, emergency treatment will be provided at the student’s request, but the cost of that treatment is the responsibility of the student.

Transportation

Students are responsible for making their own arrangements for transportation to the clinical agency sites.
