CTL Administrators

Michael Balsamo, Dean of Learning Resources and Libraries

Michael started at Macomb as a student in 1985. After graduating from Macomb with an Associate Degree, he continued his education at Oakland University where he earned the degree of Bachelors of Science in Management and at Wash College graduating with a Master’s of Science in Business Management. He is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree at Walden University. Michael came back to Macomb as an adjunct Business instructor in 2000 and became Associate Dean of Business in 2005. In 2011 he became Dean of Learning Resources and Libraries.
Deborah Armstrong, Assistant Director of Instructional Technology

Deborah has been with Macomb since late 2006. She holds bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees in Humanities and Art History, and has completed her doctoral course work in Instructional Technology and Design. Deb has taught art history at the university level for 25+ years, including several semesters abroad through Eastern Michigan University. She currently teaches at Macomb. At Wayne State University she designed and led faculty professional development sessions, and offered the first fully online workshop for faculty interested in using Blackboard. At Macomb she works with faculty to design engaging instructional strategies and integrate technology into course work.
Mary Lou Kata Assistant Director of Academic Development

Mary Lou received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and her MA from Oakland University. She graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in English and a secondary teaching certificate. Mary Lou first came to Macomb as an adjunct in 1980 and is now the Assistant Director of Academic Development in the Center for Teaching & Learning.
Carl Weckerle, Associate Director of Instructional Technology & Virtual Learning

Carl has been with the College since 2004 where he worked as an Instructional Designer in Workforce Development. He has been able to apply his experience with business and government and as a K-12 teacher towards his work with the Center for Teaching & Learning. Carl has his Master of Education in Instructional Technology and Bachelor of Science in Education, both from Wayne State University. He is currently focused on setting the strategic direction for the College’s Instructional Technology including the Learning Management System.
Nancy Zundel, Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Libraries

Nancy Zundel came to the Center for Teaching and Learning in early 2011, but has been with Macomb since November of 1995. Prior to coming to the CTL, she was an Administrative Assistant in Career & Academic Counseling, Marketing, and Human Resources. Nancy is now the Administrative Assistant for the Dean of the Libraries and Learning Resources and supports all aspects of the operations for which the Dean is responsible. She received her Associates Degree from Macomb Community College in December of 1997.

Academic Development

Janet Calabrese, Assessment and Evaluation Coordinator

Janet holds an MBA, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Leadership, and an Associate’s degree in Applied Science. She has been at Macomb College for over 24 years and has been a member of the CTL team since 2005. As Assessment and Evaluation Coordinator she is responsible for all course/program assessment and evaluation activity.
Susan Corey, R25 & Datatel/IIS Specialist

Susan currently manages the Resource 25 software system that maintains the college’s classroom/lab space and event scheduling. She has a Bachelor of Science from Northern Illinois University and has been Project Manager/Industrial Engineer for 15 years at various manufacturing and corporate facilities.
Nancy Degryse, Curriculum Assistant

Nancy started at the college as part-time clerical support in May 1999. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in May, 2000. She is currently Curriculum Assistant in the CTL. She helps with the upkeep of the curriculum records in Datatel, and assists in the production of the schedule of classes and Catalogue.
Christina Frenczli, Clerical Assistant

Christina has been with Macomb Community College for two years. She joined the CTL in 2009 as an Assessment Assistant and now provides administrative support to a multitude of Academic Development initiatives, including the many administrative details that make the CTL's professional development events successful. Christina holds an Associate's degree in Hospitality Management from Macomb Community College and is currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management from Madonna University.
Lynda Goins, Manager of Curriculum

Lynda Goins earned an Associate of Applied Science - General Business from Macomb Community College. She has worked in several positions during her 25 years of employment at Macomb. Lynda's most recent position is Manager of Curriculum which focuses on maintaining accurate information and providing data to support academic areas regarding College curriculum.
Karen Wolanchuck, Academic Services Professional Development Coordinator

Karen Wolanchuk has been with Macomb since 1985 and with the CTL since 2001 as coordinator of Staff & Professional Development and Academic Services. Karen earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Rochester College. Her responsibilities include supporting special events for the Office of the Provost, including Faculty Development Day and the Adjunct Faculty Service Awards Reception. In addition, she coordinates the Faculty Academy program, adjunct faculty orientations, and the staff & professional development series, as well as other projects the CTL.

Instructional Technology & Virtual Learning

Carmen Chastine, Virtual Learning Assistant Coordinator

Carmen Chastine has been a student and an employee at Macomb since late 2005. She holds an Associate's degree in General Studies and is currently working toward degrees in computer science and web programming. As part of the ANGEL Support team, Carmen supports students, faculty, and staff with ANGEL issues. In addition to assisting with training, she supports Macomb's use of ANGEL by developing and testing applications that may be used in conjunction with ANGEL and other LMS products. She also collaborates with other team members to develop and maintain the CTL and Virtual Learning Websites and Web applications.
William Drummond, Instructional Technology Specialist

Bill Drummond is an Instructional Technology Specialist at Macomb Community College, and is lately from Lawrence Technological University where he was eLearning Architect and Online Program Producer. Prior to Lawrence Tech, Bill served as Associate Dean for Distance Learning and Learning Support at Delta College near Saginaw. Bill holds a Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction, from Michigan State University, and spent 20 years in Korea teaching, working with Army Education, and serving as Associate Director of the Fulbright Program.
Jaclyn Dudek, Teaching and Learning Technician

In addition to helping faculty at the CTL, Jaclyn is an adjunct faculty member in the Humanities Department teaching a variety of courses form Introduction to the Arts to Comparative Religions. She also is an adjunct faculty at Wayne State University. Her academic interests include Etymology, Ancient History and Ancient Greek drama. When not reading Ancient Greek, Jaclyn leads several workshops and helps manage the CTL blog. Her favorite aspect of working at the CTL is meeting faculty from different disciplines and backgrounds.
Susan Garrity, Instructional Technology Specialist

Susan joined Macomb Community College in 2009, has a B.A. from UofD in Business and a Ph.D. from WSU in Instructional Technology. Susan has taught at CMU, Walsh, and the University of Phoenix. She has over 20 years of business experience. Working with Fortune 100 clients, she successfully managed improvement projects; streamlined processes; enhanced customer service; implemented strategic change; and managed global teams. She has developed over 300 hours of multimedia programs; authored articles and published several textbooks. One of her favorite quotes is from John Dewey: "Education is not preparation for life. Education is life itself!"
Sharon Giffen, Administrative Assistant for Instructional Technology

Sharon has been with Macomb College for six years. She began in the Business and Instructional Technology Department then moved to the Virtual Learning area where she worked with the Technical Support team prior to joining the Center for Teaching and Learning. Sharon has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and is currently enrolled in Michigan State University's Education Technology certificate program as well as Wayne State University's School of Education Instructional Technology graduate program. Her areas of focus at the CTL are adult learning [andragogy], MOITC, supporting faculty with online, hybrid, and web-enhanced course construction, facilitation, repurposing and training.
Pragna Gusani, Virtual Learning Manager

Pragna Gusani has been working with the Macomb Community College for the past four years. She has been serving as a Manager of the Virtual Learning Department at the Macomb. Her primary responsibilities include supervising department staff, providing technical support to faculty, staff and students for the ANGEL Learning Management System (LMS). Pragna took a lead role in the implementation of the LMS and continues to work closely with the LMS system vendor to provide effective virtual learning services in a cost effective manner. Prior to joining Macomb, Pragna worked for another local community college providing technical support for Blackboard and Educator.
Heidi Koskela, Administrative Assistant for Instructional Technology

Heidi has had the opportunity to work in various industries. From a recording studio internship to marketing manager for a global virtual reality software manufacturer, advertising specialties to a local library, she has gained a wealth of experience over the years. However, her most rewarding (ad)venture has been her twin daughters. Heidi joined Macomb in June of 2010 working in Arts & Sciences before joining the Center for Teaching & Learning in December 2010.
Paul Ventura, Instructional Media Coordinator

Paul started at MCC as a student in the Fall of 2000. He completed an Associate Degree in Speech with a specialty in TV broadcasting and went on to Oakland University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Arts. After graduation Paul began working as a Teaching Assistant in MCC’s Speech Department and in the Fall of 2009 joined the CTL as Instructional Media Coordinator. Paul’s areas of focus include assisting faculty with some of the latest media technologies for classroom instruction. He is also called upon to videotape and edit instructional projects for various departments throughout the college.
Scott M. Chapman, Instructional Design Artist

Scott graduated from Macomb Community College with an Associates Degree in Electronic Print Technology and has since worked for a variety of companies such as Entertainment Publications, K-Mart Corporation and MRM Worldwide producing a wide variety of visual materials. Scott has returned to Macomb both as an Instructional Design Artist and as a student, completing his general education requirements before transferring to the University Center where he plans to earn his Bachelors Degree in Communications. Scott has been happily married to his wife Lori for 11 years and they have 2 children, Connor, 7 and Claire 4.
