Bachelor of Arts in Communication

This program is available at the Macomb University Center or on the main campus.

To earn a bachelor's degree in Communication from Oakland University you should complete at least 62 credit hours at Macomb Community College and earn an Associate of Baccalaureate Studies or other applicable associate's degree. The total number of credit hours required to complete a bachelor's degree from Oakland in Communication is 124 semester hours, and you can transfer up to half that number from Macomb. The University has prepared a planned program guide for your intended degree and major. This information can be accessed through the Oakland University web site or through Macomb College's WebAdvisor system.

Oakland University has established general undergraduate degree requirements applicable to all candidates for all undergraduate degrees. In order to earn a baccalaureate at Oakland University, students must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. General Education: All students must complete 40 credits of general education from specifically identified categories. This requirement can not be completely satisfied through courses taken at Macomb Community College. Areas that need to be completed at OU include: A writing intensive in general education course and a writing intensive in the major course as well as a capstone course.

  2. U.S. Diversity: All students must acquaint themselves with American ethnic diversity by taking at least one course designated as exploring the implications of the discipline for ethnic perspectives and interrelationships. Macomb Community College equivalents to such Oakland courses are:

    HIST-2100, HIST-2200; HUMN-1460; POLS-1000

  3. Major or Primary Field of Study Requirements: Students must select a major or Primary Field of Study and in some cases they must be admitted to the major by the academic unit offering the program. The program in Communication does not have specific program admission requirements.

  4. Residence Requirement: Students must successfully complete a minimum of 32 credits at Oakland University, of which the last 8 must be completed at Oakland.

  5. Grade Point Average: Students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in courses taken at Oakland University. Transfer in credit must also be at this grade level or higher. In some programs additional GPA requirements must be met. This program does not have additional grade requirements. Transfer admission to Oakland University does require a 2.5 overall community college grade point average.

  6. Upper Level Credit Requirement: Students must successfully complete at least 32 credits in courses at the 300 level (3rd year level) or above.
