COLLEGE WORK-STUDY

College work-study is a federally-funded program that offers part-time employment either on campus or with a community service organization off-campus. This enables eligible students with financial need to earn money to pay for educational expenses at Macomb Community College. Not only do students receive meaningful work experience, but student work-study employment also helps out busy College departments and organizations.

To be considered for the college work-study program, students must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have the results sent to Macomb Community College, Federal code # 008906. Students must demonstrate financial need to participate in the college work-study program.

Various campus offices and off-campus community service organizations seek clerical and technical support. When choosing a job, a student should select an area that is meaningful to their area of study. This will provide the student with career-related work experience for his/her resume and possible job opportunities after graduation. A student may not be employed in more than one work-study job, either on or off campus.

Employment Expectations
Students are expected to do the following as it relates to their work-study job:

  • Set up a regular work schedule with the employer and report to work as scheduled
  • Inform the supervisor if unable to report to work.  Advance notice is necessary unless unforeseen circumstances prevent advance notification
  • Dress professionally when reporting to work
  • Perform all functions of the job assignment in a professional and ethical manner

Due to funding limitations, we cannot guarantee a job for everyone. Students are encouraged to begin their job search as early as possible after they receive their college work-study award.  Students will be interviewed for jobs on a first come, first served basis. A hiring freeze will be implemented if the earned wages exceed the College’s federal allocation. Also, if program funds become limited during the semester, it may be necessary to terminate all students from their work-study positions.
