What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an employer representative and a student that provides coaching and support increasing employability knowledge and skill attainment. The mentoring relationship develops as a student requests information from a Mentor who offers their insights and expertise. The mentoring relationship is formed outside of regular classroom activity, and within the confines of all institutional policies, rules, codes of conduct, and regulations.
What is a Mentor?
A Mentor is a professional who is willing to devote individual attention to a student Mentee.
What is a Mentee?
A Mentee is a student whose future career direction matches with the career pathway of the Mentor. The Mentee will request specific types of contacts (phone, e-mail, in-person) and workplace information from the Mentor.
Am I Qualified to Mentor?
A Mentor should be someone who has experience in a specific career field and is able to articulate important aspects of the world of work to the Mentee. Someone that can help the Mentee learn about and understand the transition to the world of work upon completion of an academic goal.
What does a Mentor do?
A Mentor can select what level of contact they will have with the Mentee. The Mentor can meet with the Mentee during office hours, communicate by e-mail, or have a phone conversation. Discussion topics range from basic work place preparation to appropriate areas of study for specific jobs and career pathways. The Mentor will introduce the Mentee to the world of work.
