CAREER EXPERIENCE FOR EMPLOYERS

Contacts with the business and civic community are vital to the success of our Career Experience programs. Employers interested in providing opportunities to our students are being sought for the following programs:

Internship and Cooperative Education - Internship and Cooperative Education experience allow employers the opportunity to provide students with a supervised on the job training experience which supports the development of technical and interpersonal skills critical to successful employment.  This is achieved by providing challenging work assignments that relate to the student's area of study.
Internship and Cooperative Education experiences may be either full-time or part-time.  Full-time positions require at least 30 hours each week for a complete semester (16 weeks.)  Part-time positions require a minimum of 14-29 hours each week for a complete semester (16 weeks).  These positions may be alternating (students work one semester, attend class the next) or parallel (students work while attending class.)  The goal is for the Internships and Cooperative Education experiences to be paid but there are situations where unpaid positions may be approved.

Career Mentoring - Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an employer representative and a student that provides coaching and support increasing employability knowledge and skill attainment.  The mentoring relationship develops as a student requests information from a Mentor who offers their insights and expertise.  The mentoring relationship is formed outside of regular classroom activity, and within the confines of all the institutional policies, rules, codes of conduct and regulations.  To learn more about becoming a mentor, visit MentorExperience.

Job Shadowing - Job Shadowing is an opportunity for an employer to provide an unpaid on the job experience. Job Shadowing provides students with exposure to the workplace and to a person completing a job in their field of study. This opportunity is designed to increase career awareness, help model student behaviors through examples and reinforce for the student the link between classroom learning and work requirements.

Informational Interviewing - Professionals get the opportunity to speak with students and share their knowledge about their chosen career path.  Steps can be shared by the professional that will assist students in achieving their career goals. Contact is generally conducted by phone or email.
