In the interest of promoting student success, Macomb College has developed new Academic Intervention Guidelines. Effective Fall 2007, students who have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.0, will be asked to take specific steps to learn how to become successful students. A description of the new guidelines follow:
Academic Notice
Students can be placed on academic notice at any time during their college experience when their cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0.
What does this mean?
Academic Notice means that you have experienced challenges in your classes that have affected your cumulative GPA.
How does this affect me?
You need to take steps to assure your future success at Macomb. If you do not maintain a 2.0 GPA you will not be eligible for financial aid, you will not be able to graduate, and other college/universities may not accept your courses for transfer.
How do I become successful?
- Take time to complete the "Personal Assessment Tool". This tool is designed to help you identify the Academic Intervention(s) that will provide you with the best support services.
- Participate in the intervention(s) identified by your "Personal Assessment Tool".
What if I DO NOT improve my GPA?
- You will be placed on Academic Probation (see below).
- You will not be able to graduate from Macomb with a degree or certificate until you improve your cumulative GPA to a 2.0 or higher.
Academic Probation
Students are placed on Academic Probation when their cumulative GPA remains below a 2.0 for two (2) consecutive semesters.
What does this mean?
Academic Probation means that you are continuing to experience academic challenges. It is time for you to take additional action to become successful in your classes.
How does this affect me?
- You cannot register until you:
- Complete an academic intervention OR
- See a Counselor or Academic Advisor to identify a specific intervention that is right for you.
- You will be limited to 12 semester hours of coursework.
How do I become successful?
- Complete "Your Personal Assessment" to identify your needs and contact one of the offices on the survey to schedule an academic intervention activity.
- Seriously commit to one or more intervention to improve your chances of success.
What if I DO NOT improve my GPA?
- You will remain on Academic Probation until your cumulative GPA is 2.0 or higher
Each semester you remain on Academic Probation you will be required to complete additional Academic Intervention(s) before you can register.
- You will continue to be limited to 12 semester hours of coursework
- You will not be able to graduate from Macomb with a degree or certificate until you improve your cumulative GPA to a 2.0 or higher.
An Academic Review Panel is available to handle concerns regarding Academic Intervention. Please contact the office of Dean of Student Success at 586.445.7407 if you wish to discuss meeting with the academic review panel.
