What is an online course?
Online courses are those for which all regularly scheduled, traditional classroom-oriented teaching and learning takes place in virtual classrooms. All online (virtual) course sections are identified with a specific course section designator in the Academic Schedule of Classes. A "V" in the course section number, e.g., MKTG-1210-V0801, is an online (virtual) course offering.
What is a hybrid course?
Hybrid courses, also known as "blended" at some colleges and universities, are designed to deliver a significant amount of instruction and student engagement in a virtual learning environment and meet on campus for specific scheduled dates and times. All hybrid course sections are identified with a specific course section designator in the Academic Schedule of Classes. An "H" in the course section number, e.g., MKTG-2010-H0802, is a hybrid course offering.
What is a web-enhanced course?

Are online courses available 24 hours a day?
Virtual classrooms are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Although you are free to access your online course anytime day or night, instructors typically assign regular, weekly assignments with specific deadlines that must be met. It is recommended students schedule time to access online courses, read course announcements & instructor’s lecture notes, participate in discussion forums and take quizzes and exams.
Do virtual courses cost more?

Will I really learn as much in a virtual classroom?
Yes, online and hybrid courses have the same academic rigor and relevance as on-campus courses.
Are virtual classes easier than traditional classes?
No, they are about the same. Virtual classes may feel more intense because the traditional 16 week term is accelerated into an 8 week term. Sometimes people come into an online class thinking it will be like a "correspondence course." Nothing could
be further from the truth. Online classes require a tremendous amount of interaction among students and between students and faculty -- more so, in fact, than in the traditional classroom because everyone must participate.
How are tests taken for online courses?
Most testing is completed online with a time limit for completion. However, some courses require proctored testing done by your instructor, in the learning center of Macomb, or your home college.
Do students meet at the same time in the virtual classroom?
No, virtual courses are designed to give you as much flexibility as you need to complete your work. While assignments have specific due dates, you may complete your work at any time prior to that date. Remember, the virtual classroom is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Many students work best late at night; others work best first thing in the morning. With virtual courses, you decide the best time to complete your assignments.
Should I print the First Day Handout/Course Syllabus?
Yes, the First Day Handout/Course Syllabus is the foundation of the course. It will help you to be a successful online student. Read, comprehend, and follow the syllabus in detail. Contact the instructor if you need something in the syllabus clarified. Print out the syllabus so you can refer to it off-line. One last tip—read the syllabus.
