Trying to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life? Thinking about a career in the fire service, but aren't sure if it's the right job for you? Then the Fire and Emergency Services Training Center at Macomb Community College can help.
Through Macomb's innovative one week Fire Service Career Academy, high school students have the opportunity to experience the fire academy first hand. Participants will learn from professional fire service practitioners what it's like to be a fire fighter in today's society. Some of the topics and practical experiences to be covered include:
- Basic Fire Behavior
- Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness
- Respiratory Protection
- Ladders, Hose and the Tools of the Trade
- Ropes and Knots
- EMS and the Fire Service
- Confined Space Rescue
Participants will have the opportunity to take the Macomb Fire and Emergency Services physical agility test.
Entry requirements to the fire service vary from community to community. One of the requirements for most departments is Fire Fighter I and/or Fire Fighter II Certification through the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council. Communities may also require a Basic or Advanced EMT License.
Admission Criteria
Participants must meet the minimum requirements for certification as a fire fighter in Michigan established by the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council, with the exception of age and education.
- Must be a high school student at least 16 years old
- Must have a 2.0 G.P.A.
- Obtain the recommendations of a teacher and a community leader
- Must have reliable transportation
College Credit
Students who successfully complete the Fire Service Career Academy program may receive two general elective credit hours from Macomb Community College.

The program typically runs once annualy from 9am - 5pm for one week in June. Please check the current offerings calender or call 586-498-4055 for the current schedule.
Program Cost
Cost of the program is $160.00 payable upon acceptance into the Academy. Cost includes all supplies and related material.
