ESL (English as a Second Language) courses are offered through Workforce and Continuing Education. The curriculum has been developed to help students who are non-native speakers of English, begin or improve their English skills. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be covered in each class. These courses are designed for students who simply want to learn English and everyday life skills in a relaxed atmosphere who are not interested in enrolling in academic courses at this time.
Are there different levels of ESL classes?
Yes. There are two basic ESL courses called Grammar I and II. See description in catalog to choose where you should start.
Do you offer other courses besides the basic grammar courses?
Yes, Workforce and Continuing Education offers additional courses specializing in conversation, pronunciation, writing and TOEFL iBT (internet based test) preparation and a course for passing the U.S. Citizenship Test.
Do you need to take a pre-test to register for the continuing education ESL classes?
No, but when you call to register, you will be asked what level you wish to register for. Course descriptions are available online @ www.macomb.edu , click on Community/Workforce and Continuing Education/Programs & Courses/English as a Second Language.
Will there be homework?
No.
What if I miss a class?
Students should attend 75% of the total course hours to receive CEU’s (Continuing Education Units). You can miss up to three classes and still be eligible to receive CEU’s on your transcript.
Can I use Financial Aid to pay for Workforce and Continuing Education classes?
No.
Will I receive college academic credit for Workforce and Continuing Education ESL classes?
No. You must take EAPP classes to receive college credit.
I am an F-1 Visa student. Can I take Workforce and Continuing Education ESL classes?
No. You must take EAPP classes through Macomb’s Communications Department.
What does EAPP stand for?
It stands for English for Academic Purposes. EAPP classes earn academic college credit and students receive a grade; they have homework and exams and require attendance. Students must first enroll at Macomb and take a placement test to take EAPP courses. Students who are non-native speakers of English who plan to go to college for academic credit will need to take EAPP classes.

Register online using Web Advisor. Call 586.498.4000. Walk in to the enrollment office at either South or Center Campus.
