Created in 1971, the Criminal Justice Training Center is made up of the basic police academy and advanced/in-service police training. The Criminal Justice Training Center is one of twenty-one regional criminal justice training centers in the State of Michigan and is supported by 43 member law enforcement agencies from Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne Counties. Since its inception, the Macomb Police Academy has trained more than 3,000 recruit officers for over 220 law enforcement agencies all over the State of Michigan. In the last ten years, over 50,000 officers have taken advantage of the advanced police training opportunities offered at the Center. Advanced police training provides officers with the most current methods, tactics and techniques, while preparing them for specialized job related positions and career advancement.
The Criminal Justice Training Center promotes interagency cooperation and coordinates interagency training initiatives. The Center works with its membership to identify problems and to discuss interdisciplinary solutions as well as acting as a liaison between federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies.
Located at the East Campus of Macomb Community College, the Criminal Justice Training Center offers a state of the art learning environment with classroom facilities, access to a 25-meter indoor firearms range with 24 shooting stations along with a Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) area, outdoor firearm range and a driving range at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. The campus is less then twelve miles north of Detroit with easy access to all major freeways and is approximately one hour from Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
In 2006, a 30,000 square foot addition will enhance the facility with an physical fitness training center, a 40 station computer lab, a scenario room and an evidence laboratory.
The Macomb County Prosecutor, the Macomb County Sheriff and the heads of Macomb County law enforcement agencies comprise the Macomb Community College Criminal Justice Training Advisory Committee. The staff at the Center works with the Advisory Committee in the development and implementation of police academy curriculum, policies and procedures. Additionally, the staff works with the board in curriculum development for advanced/in-service training to insure that sworn personnel are being provided with training opportunities that meet or exceed their needs while at the same time meeting the needs of the communities they serve.
