Preparing For Duty
As a police officer, you have prepared yourself to deal with any situation. But, are you prepared to advance in your career?
If you have set your sights on a top administrative post, you must be able to manage a budget as well as a crisis. You must know how to develop policies as well as lead. You must be capable of dealing with personalities within your department as well as within the community. You must possess the advanced management skills necessary to effectively perform administrative duties while commanding the respect of fellow officers.
As with all good police work, you must be prepared.
Take the Collegiate Course
An executive-level training program has been designed for police officers intent on earning the highest rank in their departments and those who have already achieved top rank. It will be offered in January at the Macomb Community College's East Campus and is called Center for Police Management and Leadership Studies.
The program is the only one of its kind in southeastern Michigan. It does not duplicate the courses of study provided by the F.B.I. Academy or the School of Staff and Command offered by the Traffic Institute of Northwestern University. The Center for Police Management and Leadership Studies is an intense, advanced course of study for which you will receive a certificate of completion from the Public Service Institute at Macomb Community College.
The setting is collegiate, so is the course of study.
What to Expect
Students attending the Center for Police Management and Leadership Studies will represent various law enforcement agencies in southeast Michigan. They will attend classes on Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 16 weeks. A total of 96 contact hours will be divided between four sections: Planning, Human Resource Management, Fiscal Management and Operational Management. Faculty will be criminal justice, human resource, financial and management experts from both the public and private sectors.
Because of the advanced level of study, written papers will be required and class participation will be expected. The emphasis of the program is on practical exercises that provide a working knowledge of the administrative function within a police department.
It will be hard work, but so is the job you are pursuing.

Registration for the Center for Police Management and Leadership Studies will be held during the Fall of the year prior to start date. Materials will be sent to you prior to that time. If you have any questions, please call Mike Metz at 586.286.2189.
