MOTORCYCLE FAQs

Can anyone take this class?
You must be at least 15 years old and be able to ride a two-wheel bicycle. Parents must sign a waiver for anyone under 18 years old. Waivers will be distributed at the first class session and must be returned prior to riding on the range.
What will I learn?
You will learn safety basic riding skills including turning, shifting and braking. The first session will be classroom time. The second session will be on the riding range.
What is the difference between a one-weekend, two-weekend and two-week (weeknight) class?
You will receive approximately 16 hours of instruction in all of these classes, four in the classroom and 12 on the range. One Weekend - This class is the most physically demanding. We recommend that you already know how to clutch and brake to take this class. Two Weekend – This class is spread out over more time. It is not as demanding as the one weekend class. Two Week (Weekday) – The pace of this class is more relaxed with riding time spread out over seven or eight days.
If the instruction time is 16 hours, why do I have to come for four hours on Friday night and 12 hours on both Saturday & Sunday?
During the first session, the class will be broken down into groups and specific riding schedules will be assigned. You will not be expected to be on site the entire time but will need to be available at the hours assigned to your group. Normally your schedule will be broken up into two or four hour blocks. We cannot predict or guarantee any specific times, so you must be available for the full 12 hours on each day.
Do I need to bring a motorcycle with me?
No, Macomb College will provide motorcycles. They range from 150cc’s to 250cc’s.
How should I dress?
Wear a long sleeve jacket or heavy shirt. Arms must be covered while riding. Wear long pants. We suggest jeans. No shorts allowed. Wear over the ankle boots. No high heels. No tennis shoes. Note: This dress is only required for the riding range. The first session will be classroom time and there are no special dress requirements for that night.
What should I bring with me?
For the riding range, you will need a DOT approved Helmet Goggles or Glasses. No face shields. Gloves. Driving gloves are fine. No half fingered gloves. Rain gear – if weather looks bad.
What if I go to the first class and decide this is going to be too hard for me. Can I get a refund?
No. There are no refunds after the class has begun.
What if it is raining or snowing? Will classes still be held?
Yes. Class is held in any kind of weather. Classes will only be cancelled if the college is closed because of a weather emergency.
Can I miss one session and still pass?
No. You must complete all classroom and riding sessions and you must pass all written and riding skills tests to successfully complete this course.
Who are the instructors for these classes?
All of our instructors are experienced motorcyclists who have completed the rigorous Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coach Training and are nationally certified to teach the MSF safety courses.
What if I don’t pass the test?
If you pass the written, but not the riding skills test, you will be given an approved class re-take form. You will need to sign up for another class and pay another $25 fee or you can come as a walk-in to any of the classes. If there are openings, your name will go to the top of the lottery list. If you are accepted into the class you will need to pay $25. You will not be required to attend the classroom sessions but must be available for the riding portion of the class.
When I finish this class, will I be receiving my motorcycle endorsement?
If you pass both the written and riding skills tests, you will receive a card that states you have passed the MSF course. You will need to take that card to the Secretary of State office. You will be required to take a written test but you will not have to take a riding test. Once you pass the written test, you will receive your endorsement.
I heard if the classes are filled, you can come as a walk-in and get in the class. Is that true?
It is best if you register for the class and reserve your spot. However, the classes do fill quickly and you may find that there is no more room. If this happens, you can try to walk-in to the class. Many times, students who have already registered do not show up and there are available spaces. Walk-ins must arrive between 15 and 30 minutes prior to the start time on the first day of class -- no sooner, no later. When you arrive you will be given a lottery number. Instructors will pull as many lottery numbers as there are open spaces. It is the luck of the draw and you may or may not get in. You will need to pay $25 if your number is chosen and you must be able to attend all the sessions. Note: Students with an approved class re-take form will have first priority in the lottery.
Can I come to a class as a walk-in even though I have already registered for a later class?
Yes. If you get into the class, you will have to pay $25 at that time. In order to get a refund for the future class that you have already registered for, you must call 586.498.4000 and ask for a refund. Please call one or two days after you complete the class.
I already know how to ride a motorcycle. I just need to take the MSF class so I can get my endorsement. Do I need to take a BRC class?
No, you can take the Performance Based class. It is designed for the experienced but unlicensed rider to become licensed and legal. You must furnish your own motorcycle for this class. You will need proof of insurance and your bike must pass a safety inspection test prior to the riding skills test.
I already have my endorsement but need to take an approved Motorcycle class so that I can lower my insurance rates. What class should I take?
You can take either the Experienced Rider or Performance Based class.
Are scooters allowed?
You are allowed to bring your scooter or shiftless motorcycle to the Performance Based class but you must present proof of registration, proof of no-fault insurance and display a valid motorcycle license plate.
