What does a Fashion Designer do?

Fashion designers create clothing and accessory designs for a specialty store or an individual client. They may plan the production and marketing of their creations and often specialize in one type of garment or accessory for women’s or men’s wear, children’s garments, shoes, handbags, swimwear or lingerie. Designers develop original ideas or follow established fashion trends to define the silhouette, colors, and kinds of materials that will be in demand each season. They have to master skills to sketch their ideas, draw and cut patterns to create sample garments, select fabric and trimmings, and perfect their sewing skills to combine basic dressmaking and tailoring principles with flat pattern work and draping techniques to fit and modify the finished garment.

Macomb’s Fundamental of Fashion Design course will be presented in the Winter and Fall Schedule of classes.

What does a Fashion Illustrator do?

Fashion Illustrators, also known as Fashion Sketchers, get paid to render or draw fashion trends and have fun.  They are trained to take a virtual fashion idea and turn it into a fashion concept or illustration. They may be called upon to sketch the new fashions presented on the runway. They often meet with clients to convert their fashion ideas into sketches. If you love fashion, it does not matter whether you’re an advanced art student or a complete novice, you can train to draw fashion figures and begin to break into this highly lucrative business.

What does an Alteration Specialist do?
Alteration Specialists take care of the problem that one size does not fit all. Skills to customize clothing and complete basic repairs are in high demand. Whether you want to open your own business as an entrepreneur, enter into the job market, or master the skills to custom tailor your clothes, Macomb’s Alteration Specialist course is for you. (Coming Fall 2008)
