The college has been monitoring the reports concerning the swine flu outbreak, including contact with the Macomb County Health Department. According to a news release issued by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) on May 5, 2009, in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is now recommended that school facilities remain open in response to probable or confirmed cases of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus (otherwise known as swine flu).
As the CDC continues monitoring the outbreak, it has been determined the Influenza A (H1N1) strain is much milder than originally suspected. To reduce the spread of influenza, the MDCH encourages early identification of ill students and staff, encouraging staff and students to stay home when ill, and using good cough and hand hygiene. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/) recommend taking these actions:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue promptly and carefully.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to help stem the transmission of germs.
- Stay home when sick to prevent the spread of illness.
If you stay home because you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms that include fever, cough and sore throat, consult with your personal physician. Faculty, staff and students should contact the Office of Human Resources at 586-445-7885 to report your condition.
The college is committed to the health and safety of Macomb faculty, staff and students. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and update the website with any new developments or precautions that may be necessary.
