The college continues to monitor reports concerning the H1N1 virus, maintaining close contact with the Macomb County Health Department. It is believed the virus will become more prevalent and affect large numbers of people this flu season.
At this time, good personal hygiene practices are still the best method of prevention, since influenza is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/) recommend taking these actions:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue promptly and carefully.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to help stem the transmission of germs.
- Stay home when sick to prevent the spread of illness.
If you stay home because you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms that include fever, cough and sore throat, consult with your personal physician.
The Michigan Department of Community Health has issued Flu Guide FAQs for schools. Children and students ages 6 months - 24 years of age is the population most affected by the H1N1 virus. The Macomb County Health Department also issued a General H1N1 FAQs and is offering H1N1 Vaccine Clinic.
The college is committed to the health and safety of Macomb faculty, staff and students. We will continue to carefully monitor this rapidly evolving situation and update you on any new developments or precautions that may be necessary.
